Stacey Jarvis, Microsoft Canada, on search marketing today and bing!

Byron Gordon, SEO-PR, interviews Stacey Jarvis, Search Lead, Consumer & Online, Microsoft Canada about the state of search today. Stacey first gives a brief overview of search, starting from the days of text-base content to today’s explosion of multimedia, including video, music, audio, deep links, etc…But search user satisfaction hasn’t evolved in the way marketers expected. Stacey says there needs to be a better way to search. According to Stacey, 1 in 4 search queries are actually satisfied. Users are spending 25% of all of their queries on refining their queries. More than 50% of online sessions consist of users spending more than 30+ minutes online. Stacey makes the point that most users don’t have the time to spend excessive amounts of time online to find what they are searching for. Only 9% of all queries take less than 3 minutes to complete. 66% of search users are making decisions in key areas of their lives. Stacey also mentions that more than 60% of Canadians are using multiple search engines. Stacey concludes with the advent of Microsoft’s latest entry into the world of search, bing!
